Meta’s Superintelligence Labs has put 600 employees on a non-working notice period until November 21st, as part of a strategic restructuring. CEO Alexandr Wang explains that this move aims to streamline operations and enhance efficiency. In his memo, Wang states, ‘By reducing the team size, we aim to minimize decision-making conversations and empower each individual to take on more significant responsibilities and have a broader impact.’
The layoffs primarily affect Meta’s legacy AI infrastructure teams and product-focused positions, excluding the elite TBD Labs division, which houses recent high-profile hires. Wang emphasizes that this restructuring does not indicate a reduction in AI investment. Instead, it’s about creating a more agile and talent-dense team. He reassures employees that Meta will continue to hire top AI talent, focusing on industry-leading AI-native professionals.
This decision comes amidst Meta’s significant AI investments, including billions spent on recruiting top researchers from competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. Despite the layoffs, Meta’s Superintelligence Labs now has a workforce of just under 3,000 employees,
